It all started with a river journey. Twenty boys society labels troubled youth or young offenders, some experienced river guides, and one powerful question: What if masculinity could mean something more?
Set against the backdrop of white-water rapids and fireside conversations, The Quirky Quest for ManGood captures the breakthroughs, struggles, and quiet triumphs as our group begins to shed its armour and become real. The flickering light of the riverside campfire provides the stage where boys and river guides open up, reflect, and reconnect — each moment another step on their quirky quest to rediscover what it truly means to be a man.
Includes:
- Real-life river tales and rescue stories
- Over 30 thought-provoking “quirkers” (quirky poems)
- A roadmap for emotional literacy and connection
From Firelight to ManGood
The Quirky Quest for ManGood
Twenty troubled boys, thirteen days on a wild river. Whitewater rapids, crackling campfires and ManGood.
This is a book born in wild places where boys could no longer hide behind bravado. Around crackling campfires and inside sacred sweat lodges, stories were shared that broke open old ideas of what it means to be male. A Native American elder’s words, honouring women as “those who beat with two hearts,” left an imprint that still guides me today.
I carried those teachings back to the rivers, where 20 young offenders sat in circles with river guides and discovered new ways of seeing themselves, their mothers, and women in general. Out of those moments came quirkers: zany, rap-like rhymes with rhythm and bounce that young men could relate to. At first they laughed, then they leaned in, realising that humour and cadence could carry truths more powerfully than lectures.
Soon they began writing their own quirkers, including heartfelt tributes to their mums. In those moments, something ancient stirred: respect, tenderness, and a reconnection to the women who had given them life; a new reconnection and respect for all life; including their own.
That simple shift matters. When boys learn to respect women at a deep emotional level, they plant seeds that can help reduce all forms of violence against women. Respect in thought, word, and action becomes the new foundation for manhood, what I call ManGood.
Blending memoir, fireside storytelling, and quirkers, this book invites males of every age to:
Break free from outdated stereotypes that keep men boxed in
See vulnerability as a source of strength
Reclaim humour, creativity, and compassion as masculine qualities
Reconnect with mothers, sisters, and partners in deeper, more respectful ways
Step into a version of masculinity that is wise, kind, and courageous enough to change the culture around us
This is not just a book; it is a movement in story form. Whether you are a boy, a young man under pressure, or an older man fine-tuning what kind of masculinity you live and pass on, The Quirky Quest for ManGood offers both a mirror and a map.
At its heart, this is more than a book. It is an invitation to join a journey—one that begins with humour and quirkiness but leads to deeper respect, emotional honesty, and a new vision of what it means to grow into ManGood.
Grab your paddle, settle by the fire, and step into the quest. The river awaits.
The river awaits, the fire is lit, the lodge is warm, and the stories are ready. All you need to bring is your willingness to listen and to change.
