Man and teens around campfire by river

River Strong, Campfire Real — The Quirky Quest for ManGood

A remote river; 20 young offenders, tough on the outside, unsure on the inside; 20 young voices waiting to be heard.

Around the campfires, stories became mirrors, laughter became medicine, and something quietly began to change.

The river had another lesson – the ManGood Project was born

Awakening the good man quietly waiting inside every boy

Stripped of noise, routine and the need to perform, the boys gradually began to open up. Guided by a handpicked team of seasoned river guides, they spent their days reading rapids and their evenings gathered around the campfire.

There, something unexpected began to surface. Laughter became medicine. Stories became mirrors. Moments of silliness gave way to quiet truths, and courage was measured not by bravado, but by a willingness to speak honestly from the heart.

Around those fires, the boys and adults explored questions many had never asked before. What does it really mean to be a good man? Which parts of ourselves deserve protecting as we grow older? What strengths should we hold on to, and what should we leave behind?

Night after night, beneath star-filled skies, the river became our classroom. Together we discovered that toughness and tenderness, courage and kindness, strength and authenticity were never opposites. The river had been teaching that lesson all along.

The Quirky Quest for ManGood captures that unfolding; its breakthroughs, blow-ups, and quiet triumphs, as boys and guides alike shed their armour and began to show up as themselves.

Lit by the flickering glow of riverside campfires, their quirky quest unfolds, wild, wise, and full of heart.

What began as a river journey became a mirror for life itself, revealing how courage, kindness, and laughter can reshape the story of manhood.

Each rapid conquered, each honest conversation, helped carve a new map for what it means to grow from boyhood toward ManGood; real, respectful, and emotionally alive.

Watching, listening, observing

As the boys settled into the rhythm of the river, they began to notice more;  not just the rapids, but the quiet teachings of the wild.

Nature became their guide, offering a new way to see, feel, and be.

Just like the indigenous natives who had lived here for thousands of years.

Along the river valleys nature abounded.

While bears searched for berries on the riverbanks, bald eagles circled overhead. The river otters, amazing comedians, danced through the eddies, rolled in delight, and played like no one was watching.

They didn’t posture, compete, or dominate; they flowed.

The Otter Way:

They slip and slide, they duck and weave,
they roll through eddies, splash and leave
a trail of giggles in their wake;
like furry clowns on a river break.

They chase the bubbles just for fun,
then moon-dive laughing at the sun.
No rush, no fuss, no need to show;
just joy in every undertow.

We watch them play, then glance around;
could we, like them, be fun unbound?
Less growl, more glide, less fight, more flow;
the otter way; where ManGood grows.

The ManGood Project

The ManGood Project is a bold and creative initiative inspired by the book The Quirky Quest for ManGood. It is a journey that blends wild river rapids, honest reflection, and fireside conversations that matter.

At its heart, the ManGood Project is an invitation to explore a healthier, kinder and more authentic way of being male.

Through powerful stories, quirky poems called quirkers, open discussions, and practical tools, ManGood offers a fresh path forward. It invites a version of masculinity that is healthier, kinder, and more deeply connected to ourselves, to others, and to the world we share.

Why quirky?
Because young men don’t need another lecture. Quirky rhymes, like rap music, slip past defences, spark laughter, and turn into conversations that can change how we see ourselves and each other.

Around campfires and riverbanks, our funny little rap-like rhymes opened doors. Quirkers became keys to the conversations boys and men craved.

Big words fall flat on lads I’ve known,
their minds drift off, their eyes have flown.
But rap-like rhyme can light the spark;
a truth can land when shaped like art.

Why It Matters

From toxic online influences to outdated masculinity models, boys today are bombarded by messages that reward dominance and disconnection.

Many feel confused about what it means to be a man.

The ManGood Project offers an antidote: a place where vulnerability, strength, emotion, and respect come together.

It’s not about telling boys who to be — it’s about asking better questions and opening space for truth, connection, and courage.

The Book: The Quirky Quest for ManGood

It all started with a river journey. Twenty young offenders from an Oregon Detention Centre, a group of experienced river guides, and one powerful question: What if masculinity could mean something more?

Set against the backdrop of whitewater rapids and fireside conversations, The Quirky Quest for ManGood captures the breakthroughs, struggles, and quiet triumphs as our group begins to shed its armour and become real. The flickering light of the riverside campfire provides the stage where boys and river guides open up, reflect, and reconnect — each moment another step on their quirky quest to rediscover what it truly means to be a man.
